Tens of tonnes of glass and steel: a strange recipe for such a lightweight building! But that was the bold gamble taken by Leopold II’s favourite architect for a king who wanted a “little winter garden” adjoining his palace, to house plants and tropical trees from all over the planet. For a fortnight every year, the public can wander around this truly special world: in full flower, rare species fill these vast spaces with intoxicating scents.
